You have a design, an Instagram account with a few thousand followers and the idea of turning it into t-shirts. The classic route: order 200 shirts from a printer, pay €1,500 upfront, stack the boxes in the hallway and hope size M does not sell out first. Print on demand flips that around. You sell first, printing happens only when an order comes in, and you never touch the shirt.
Printful is the provider that shows up in almost every tutorial about this model. The promise: connect your store, upload a design, create a product, done. Everything else, printing, packing, shipping and returns, Printful handles in its own factories, for European customers in Latvia and Spain.

What is Printful?
Printful is a print-on-demand fulfilment company with its own production sites. Unlike marketplace models such as Printify, which pass orders to third-party print shops, Printful prints in-house: in seven factories in the United States, Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain and Latvia. For your customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland that means Riga and Barcelona; the UK plant only ships to UK addresses. Which plant gets an order is decided by the system based on stock and printing method, you cannot choose it.
The company was founded in 2013 by Lauris Liberts and Davis Siksnans out of the Latvian Draugiem group, with headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, and its European base in Riga. By its own account Printful has delivered more than 143 million items since 2013, and the catalogue holds around 550 products. In 2021 the investor Bregal Sagemount bought in with 130 million dollars.
The biggest news of recent years: in November 2024 Printful and its main rival Printify merged. Since late 2025 the joint parent company is called Fyul, a word made from the endings of both names. Both brands continue separately with their own accounts, catalogues and prices. A shared platform has been announced but is nowhere in sight as of September 2026. In reviews the merger only shows up as an explanation for slower support, and whether that is true cannot be verified from the outside.

Printful does not sell anything itself, it plugs into your store. As soon as an order arrives there, it moves automatically into production. There are more than 20 integrations; these are the ones that matter for sellers in the DACH region:

The most important features
Design tool and mockups. You upload a PNG, position it on the product and get mockup photos for your store immediately. The tool ships with thousands of cliparts, fonts and embroidery-ready graphics, plus Getty images at one dollar per use. For most beginners this is the reason to stay with Printful: from upload to a finished Shopify product takes less than ten minutes.
Printing methods. Garments are printed with DTG (direct to garment on cotton) or, since October 2025, with DTFlex, Printful’s version of DTF transfer printing for polyester, fleece and vivid colours. Add embroidery, all-over print (the fabric is printed before sewing) and sublimation for mugs, posters and phone cases. Printful decides which method a product gets.
Branding. From the first shirt you can add your logo and text to the packing slip at no cost. Printed inside labels (€0.99), outside labels (€2.75), pack-ins and custom packaging cost extra. Pack-ins and packaging have to be stored at Printful, with a minimum fee of €22 a month.
Samples. Once a store is connected, you may place one sample order a month with up to three items at a 20 percent discount. As sales grow this rises to five orders. Printful does not sell blank products without a print.
Printful Growth. The only subscription costs €24.99 a month and lowers product prices by up to 33 percent, though for many products considerably less. From 12,000 dollars in yearly sales you get Growth free for a year, but only if you had already subscribed. Shopify users get 90 days free. More in the worked example below.
Warehousing your own goods. This existed in Europe until early 2026. Since 1 March 2026 Printful no longer accepts third-party stock in Riga, Barcelona, the UK or Canada; warehousing continues in the United States only. Anyone who wanted to combine Printful printing with their own stocked products from one warehouse now needs a second provider.
What Printful costs
Printful has no base fee, no setup cost and no minimum order. Per order you pay the product price, which includes one print, plus shipping and, depending on your situation, VAT. That sounds simple, but the total is higher than most beginners expect. These are the net prices in the EU catalogue in September 2026:

Each additional item in the same order adds only €1.25 (shirts) to €2.00 (hoodies) in shipping. Mugs always ship separately. Then come the extras that add up quickly: a second print area around €5.25, a sleeve print €2.20, sizes from 2XL €1.30 per step, one-time digitisation of an embroidery file €2.95 to €6.50. From 25 units you get up to 30 percent volume discount, but that is no longer print on demand.
A worked example for a t-shirt. You sell the Bella+Canvas shirt for €29.90 including VAT, which is €25.13 net. Printful charges you €14.95, so €10.18 remain before Etsy or Shopify fees, payment processing and advertising. With the Growth plan the shirt price drops 13 percent to about €9.10, saving €1.36 per shirt. The €24.99 subscription therefore pays off from roughly 19 shirts a month; for hoodies with only 9 percent discount, from about 15. Below that it is a loss.
Without a VAT ID you pay 19 percent more
Printful invoices from Latvia or Spain. If you submit an EU VAT ID and let Printful verify it, invoices come at 0 percent VAT and you account for the tax yourself under the reverse-charge mechanism. If you have none, for example as a small business under Germany’s VAT exemption, Printful adds your country’s VAT (19 percent in Germany, 20 in Austria) to product, shipping and services, and you cannot reclaim it. €14.95 becomes €17.79. On Etsy it gets worse: the marketplace already withholds VAT from the end customer, yet Printful still charges it to you. Two separate transactions, tax twice.
How prices have developed
Printful rarely raises product prices, but it regularly raises shipping and extras. On 27 August 2026 shipping rates to Europe went up by 20 to 30 cents per order, to Switzerland by 30 to 40 cents. The Growth plan was still called Premium until early 2025 and replaced the old Plus and Pro plans. At sister company Printify the Premium plan rose from 29 to 39 dollars in February 2026, while Printful kept its €24.99. Relevant going forward: since July 2026 products coming from the US into the EU carry a flat customs charge of €3 per item, because the EU abolished the €150 duty-free threshold. EU-made goods from Riga or Barcelona are not affected.
Shipping to Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Production takes two to five business days according to Printful, and standard shipping within Europe another five to twenty business days. In practice German sellers report eight to fourteen days from order to doorstep, considerably longer in the Christmas season. Express is only available to the UK.

Switzerland is handled more cleanly by Printful than by most competitors: Printful is VAT-registered there and adds the 8.1 percent directly to your invoice so the parcel does not get stuck at the border. Switzerland abolished industrial customs duties in 2024 anyway. The price for that is a shipping rate twice as high. Some Swiss sellers still report delays and extra charges, mostly on shipments that did not come from Europe.
What works well day to day
The strongest point is getting started. Create an account, connect the store, upload a design, publish the product: an Etsy shop with ten designs is live in an afternoon without a cent upfront. In German-language Trustpilot reviews that is the most frequent sentence: product creation and sync simply work.
The integrations are Printful’s real product. Shopify orders flow into production without any action, tracking numbers go back to the store, customers receive shipping emails. With more than 3,800 reviews and 4.8 stars, the Shopify app is one of the best-rated in the entire print-on-demand category.
EU production is the decisive advantage over many US providers for stores in Germany. Goods from Riga or Barcelona arrive without customs and without surprises for the customer, prices are fixed in euros, and the invoice comes from an EU entity. Filter the catalogue to “Europe” in the dashboard and you only see products that are actually made there.
And the print quality when everything goes right: DTG prints on Bella+Canvas and Stanley/Stella are soft and wash-resistant, and the embroidery is considered among the best in the industry. Three-way comparisons on YouTube and many Reddit threads reach the same conclusion: Printful is pricier than Printify but on average more consistent.
Where the limits are
The price level. A landed cost of €14.95 for a printed shirt is four to five euros more than at Printify’s German print partners or at Spreadconnect. If you sell through paid ads, you rarely keep more than eight euros of margin per shirt at Printful. The Growth discounts only partly offset this and only pay off from around 20 orders a month.
Misaligned prints and inconsistency. The most common quality complaint in 2026 reviews is not the print itself but its placement: designs sit too high, off-centre or slightly rotated. A German seller describes back prints starting a few centimetres below the collar. Printful replaces misprints after a claim with a photo, but by then the customer already has the shirt. If precision matters to you, order a sample of every product before launch.
Support. There is no phone support, the chat starts with a bot, and according to many reports tickets have taken days instead of hours since late 2025. Printful nowhere promises German-language support, and the help articles are in English. On Trustpilot Printful answers almost every negative review within a day, which rarely helps the individual case.
Delivery times in the fourth quarter. In December 2025 orders at US plants sat unprocessed for two to three weeks, and in summer 2026 there was a backlog in Mexico. Europe was less affected, but if you sell on Etsy, late shipments cost you Star Seller status no matter whose fault it is. Plan your Christmas cut-off for late November.
Out of stock and sync. Products go out of stock now and then, especially popular hoodie colours, and the Etsy sync occasionally drops. That happens with every print-on-demand provider, but at Printful it is a recurring theme in one-star reviews.
What applies specifically to the DACH region
Printful has no plant in Germany, and the Polish plant announced in 2019 never made it onto the list of locations. Delivery from Riga is still fine, just not comparable to a print shop in Halle or Leipzig. The European catalogue is smaller than the US one because not every brand is available from EU suppliers. And tax logic is where most beginners leave money on the table: submit your VAT ID before the first order, otherwise you pay 19 percent you never get back. If you start as a small business under the VAT exemption, calculate with €17.79 instead of €14.95 per shirt.

The picture is the same across platforms: sellers who use Printful as a tool for store integration and product creation are happy. Criticism starts where Printful has to deliver physically, with print placement, stock and delivery time, and where something goes wrong and support is needed.

Who Printful is right for
A good fit if you start with Shopify or Etsy and want to test whether your designs sell without any upfront cost, if you value consistent print quality and a clean store integration, if you have customers in several countries and want production close to them, or if you have a VAT ID and your pricing works at around €15 per shirt.
Less suitable if you compete on price and need every euro of margin, if you use Shopware or JTL, if you want “Made in Germany” on the label, if you depend on German-language support, or if you run a small business without a VAT ID and have not priced in the 19 percent.
Our verdict
Printful is the provider with the least friction in print on demand. The integrations are the best in the industry, the design tool is beginner-friendly, the EU plants spare German stores customs and dollar exchange rates, and the embroidery is a genuine argument. Anyone launching a first merch project can hardly go wrong with it.
What keeps the rating at 3.9 is the price of that convenience: almost €15 landed cost for a shirt, surcharges for everything beyond the first print, a subscription that only pays off from 20 orders, and a tax logic that penalises small businesses. Add more complaints about print placement and support in 2026 than in the years before. The merger with Printify has brought sellers nothing so far.
Our recommendation: start with Printful, order a sample of every product before launch and submit your VAT ID on day one. Calculate with €15 net per shirt and a retail price of no less than €29. Once you reach 20 to 30 orders a month, compare your bestsellers at Printify with a German print shop. Until then Printful is the safer choice.

Does Printful work with Shopware or JTL?
No, there is no Printful integration for the German shop systems Shopware and JTL. Officially supported are Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop, Wix and Squarespace among others, plus an API for custom setups. Shopware users find ready-made integrations at Spreadconnect or Shirtee.
What happens with misprints and returns?
Misprints, damaged or wrong items are replaced free of charge if you report the problem with a photo within 30 days of delivery. Returns because the customer dislikes the size or design are at your expense, since every product is made to order. For customers in the EU the statutory warranty applies, and you have to reflect that in your store terms.
