TL;DR: Wix in 30 seconds
- Wix is the best-known website builder in the world: 300+ million registered users, 900+ templates, and since January 2026 “Wix Harmony”, an AI builder that creates sites in a conversation.
- As a website builder, Wix is strong: the easiest editor on the market, real design freedom, German-language support, and the old “bad for SEO” reputation is demonstrably outdated in 2026.
- Selling requires at least the Core plan (regular €29.75/month incl. VAT in Germany). Wix takes 0% commission on sales; Wix Payments charges 1.9% + €0.30 per card transaction in Germany, cheaper than Shopify Basic.
- The e-commerce limits are real: max 1,000 variants per product, a checkout you can barely customize, no POS and no SEPA direct debit in Germany, no ERP integration, no site export. The key dropshipping tools (DSers, Zendrop) do not exist for Wix.
- Most common user complaint: steep renewal price increases after the discounted first year, plus chatbot support loops (Trustpilot 3.5 from nearly 29,000 reviews).
- Our rating: 3.9 out of 5. First choice for websites with a small shop attached; for serious e-commerce and dropshipping, Shopify is the better foundation.
- Transparency: we have no partnership with Wix and earn nothing from this article. All links are plain links.
When someone googles “create a website” for the first time, chances are they end up at Wix. Massive brand search volume, advertising all the way up to the Super Bowl, and a promise unchanged since 2006: a professional website without writing a line of code.
For anyone interested in e-commerce, though, the real question is different: does Wix work as a shop platform? On paper a lot sounds good: 0% sales commission, 50,000 products, dropshipping integrations. We examined the features, the German pricing, the hard limits of the store system, and the direct comparison with Shopify.
Our rating: 3.9 / 5
The best beginner website builder, with impressive AI features and genuine design freedom. As a shop system it is solid for small catalogs but runs into hard limits on variants, checkout, payment methods and scaling. Further deductions for the renewal pricing policy and weak performance in independent speed tests.

What is Wix?
Wix.com was founded in Tel Aviv in 2006, has been listed on NASDAQ since 2013 and generated close to two billion dollars in revenue in 2025. By its own count, over 300 million people in 190 countries use the platform, making it by far the market leader among dedicated website builders. For the DACH market, everything is fully localized: German website, German editor, German help center, and the German pricing page explicitly promises German-language support.
The product landscape was reshuffled recently. In 2026 there are three ways to a Wix site: the classic editor (drag and drop, for beginners), Wix Studio (the pro editor for agencies that grew out of Editor X in 2023), and since January 2026 Wix Harmony, the new AI builder where you develop the site in a conversation with the AI agent “Aria” and refine it visually afterwards. The old ADI assistant was retired at the end of 2024. On top come more than 20 everyday AI features, from text and image generation to AI product descriptions and the dashboard assistant “Astro”.
And the famous SEO stigma? It dates from an era when Wix pages were rendered purely client-side. Today Wix serves server-rendered HTML with automatic sitemaps, redirects, structured data and a robots.txt editor; in the 2025/2026 Core Web Vitals surveys, roughly three quarters of Wix sites pass Google’s thresholds, more than WordPress manages. “Bad for SEO” is no longer a defensible blanket claim, even if the platform gives you less code-level control than a self-hosted system.

Wix pricing in 2026
The German plans (as of August 2026, including VAT, billed yearly) look like this. Crucial for shop plans: you can only accept payments from the Core plan upwards; the free plan and Light cannot sell.
| Plan | Regular/month | E-commerce | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free plan | €0 | no | Wix subdomain, Wix ads |
| Light | €16.66 | no | Custom domain (free for 1 year), 2 GB storage |
| Core | €29.75 | Basic e-commerce | Accept payments, 50 GB, German legal texts included (1st year) |
| Business | €40.46 | Standard e-commerce | 100 GB, standard marketing suite |
| Business Elite | €177.31 | Advanced | Unlimited storage, advanced dev platform |
Two things to know. First, Wix runs discount campaigns almost permanently; when we checked, “50% off the first year” was live on Core through Business Elite. Second, and less pleasant: renewals get noticeably more expensive. User reports from 2025/2026 document jumps of 20 to over 50 percent versus the discounted first-year price, sometimes with short notice, and the 14-day money-back guarantee only covers new purchases, not renewals. Budget with the regular prices from the table, not the promo price, and put the renewal date in your calendar.
Sales fees, on the other hand, are genuinely fair: 0% commission on your sales, even with third-party payment providers. Wix Payments charges 1.9% + €0.30 per card transaction in Germany (Klarna 2.99% + €0.35), undercutting Shopify Basic’s 2.1%.
Wix as an online store: what works well
The Wix Stores module covers the basics cleanly: up to 50,000 products (manual or CSV), inventory management, coupons and gift cards, abandoned-cart emails, a built-in CRM with email marketing, and a modern one-page checkout with guest orders, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Digital products, product subscriptions and appointment bookings via Wix Bookings are native too, which many pure shop systems do not offer.
On payments, German merchants get Wix Payments, PayPal, Klarna (including pay-by-invoice via Klarna), Stripe, Mollie and SumUp; since late 2025 Wix has been expanding European payment methods through a Stripe collaboration. Taxes can be automated from the Business plan upwards through the integrated Avalara engine (capped at 100 transactions per month, 500 on Elite), including the €10,000 EU distance-selling threshold for OSS; filing the OSS return remains your job. Wix can auto-generate invoices, and for German GoBD archiving and DATEV there are connector services like easybill.
For dropshipping there is a real ecosystem: Modalyst has belonged to Wix since 2021 and provides the native integration, joined by Spocket, CJdropshipping, Syncee, and Printful/Printify for print-on-demand. Important: the Modalyst integration is capped per plan, at just 25 products on Core and 250 on Business; only Business Elite allows the full catalog. Enough for a small test shop. Why it still falls short for serious dropshipping is what the next section is about.
The limits of Wix eCommerce: where it gets tight
This is the part the Wix marketing does not tell you, and it decides whether the platform fits. Almost all of these limits are stated openly in Wix’s own help articles.
The variant ceiling: A product may have at most 6 options with 100 choices each and 1,000 variants total. For fashion with many size-color combinations or configurable products that is quickly too little; Shopify has allowed double that since October 2025. A feature request for more variants has been collecting votes for ages with no commitment.
A checkout set in concrete: The checkout page cannot be designed in the editor, mandatory fields are fixed, some system texts cannot be edited, and one-click or post-purchase upsells effectively do not exist. Even with the Velo code layer or Wix Headless, payment still happens on the hosted Wix checkout; building your own is prohibited by the terms of service. This is exactly where Shopify merchants earn real money with upsell apps, money a Wix store leaves on the table.
German payment gaps: There is no native SEPA direct debit in Wix Payments and no classic pay-by-invoice other than through Klarna. Worse for anyone with a physical presence: Wix POS is not available in Germany (US, Canada, UK only), and the TSE compliance German cash registers legally require is missing entirely.
Shipping and back office: Native real-time shipping rates only work with the US carrier USPS; DHL needs third-party apps. There are no native connections to German ERP and accounting staples like JTL, Billbee, Xentral or DATEV, only niche connectors. If you need a proper back office, perhaps around an ERP like Odoo, you hit a hard wall. Marketplaces too: since April 2024, Meta no longer supports Facebook/Instagram shops created via Wix, and Amazon/eBay only work through third-party apps.
Internationalization: Multi-currency now exists natively, but only from the Business plan upwards (main currency plus 5, Elite plus 10), with a 1–2% conversion fee, payouts only in your main currency and none of the per-market price control Shopify Markets offers. Store translation via Wix Multilingual leaves gaps as well: product subscriptions and some system texts stay untranslated.
B2B: No customer-group pricing, tiered pricing or quote workflows at all; Wix itself suggests password-protected pages as a workaround.
Lock-in: The most uncomfortable limit. A template cannot be switched later; the official path is rebuilding the site. And if you leave, you can export products, orders and contacts as CSV, but neither design nor page content nor code. A growing Wix shop practically always migrates via full rebuild, and you should price those switching costs in from day one.
Performance: In independent long-term measurements (such as EcommerceGold’s annual speed test), Wix has ranked at the bottom of shop platforms for years, with mobile load times around four seconds. In a store, that measurably costs revenue.
Wix vs. Shopify: the head-to-head
The question almost every shop founder asks. The raw numbers first:
| Criterion | Wix | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest selling plan (DE) | Core, regular €29.75 incl. VAT | Basic, €27 net (yearly) |
| Platform commission | 0% | 0% with Shopify Payments, else 0.6–2% |
| Card fees (Germany) | 1.9% + €0.30 | 2.1% + €0.30 (Basic) down to 1.6% |
| Products / variants | 50,000 / max 1,000 per product | Unlimited / 2,048 per product |
| Apps | ~500–1,000 | ~18,400 |
| Dropshipping apps | ~48 (Modalyst, Spocket, CJ) | ~934 (DSers, Zendrop, CJ, AutoDS …) |
| Internationalization | Multi-currency with restrictions | Shopify Markets (130+ currencies, local pricing) |
| German legal texts | Court-proof legal texts included (1st year), Trusted Shops app | IT-Recht Kanzlei app with auto-updates ($9.90/month) |
| Known DACH shops | no notable ones | Waterdrop, SNOCKS, KoRo, Air up and many more |
The pattern is clear. On entry price and payment fees, Wix is actually slightly cheaper, and if you mainly want a beautiful website with a small shop attached, Wix gives you more design for less effort. Shopify wins everywhere the shop is the business: the app ecosystem (factor 20), the customizable checkout with upsells, international markets, dropshipping tooling, and the sheer number of successful references. It is no coincidence that virtually every known DACH D2C brand runs on Shopify and none on Wix.
For the typical ecom-tools reader that means: if you are planning dropshipping or a scalable brand, start on Shopify right away; the tools for it (DSers, Zendrop, upsell apps, affiliate apps like UpPromote) simply do not exist on Wix. Wix reviews: what users say
The review landscape is split, on every portal at once. On Capterra, Wix scores 4.4 out of 5 from more than 10,700 reviews, on G2 4.2, on Germany’s OMR Reviews 4.1. The praise is always the same: the easiest editor on the market, the template selection, and increasingly the AI features.
Trustpilot shows the other face: 3.5 out of 5 from nearly 29,000 reviews, with 22 percent one-star ratings. The complaints rarely concern the builder itself and almost always the money: automatic renewals at sharply higher prices (documented cases jumping from €336 to €585 for two years), refused refunds, and support that too often dead-ends in chatbot loops. German reviewers calculate how the same plan got about 65 percent more expensive between 2022 and 2026. Shop owners additionally report editors slowing down as catalogs grow and app costs stacking up. In fairness: publicly escalated payout-freeze cases are documented far less often for Wix Payments than for Shopify Payments, although both providers carry the same reserve mechanics in their fine print.
Who is Wix for – and who should skip it?
Wix fits when the website is the centerpiece and the shop is a sideline: service providers with a booking calendar and a few products, cafés and restaurants, artists and creators selling merch, local stores with small catalogs of under 50 to 100 products selling within the DACH region. In return you get the fastest route to a genuinely good-looking website, with AI tailwind, German support, bundled legal texts and payment fees that undercut Shopify.
Skip Wix if the shop is your business model. Dropshipping beginners will find neither DSers nor Zendrop nor the upsell ecosystem where performance e-commerce makes its margin. Anyone planning B2B, an ERP-backed operation, a physical store with a till, or international markets runs straight into the limits described above. And if your plan is to start small and switch later: the missing export makes the move more expensive than starting on the right platform early.
Is Wix worth it? Our verdict
In 2026, Wix is the best builder for people who want a website and zero technical overhead, and with Harmony it currently leads the AI website-building race. The old SEO objection is outdated, the German localization is serious, and the store module handles small catalogs properly and commission-free.
As an e-commerce platform, however, Wix remains a compromise with clear ceilings: the variant limit, the rigid checkout, missing German payment methods and POS, no ERP connectivity, weak performance, and a lock-in that makes leaving expensive. Add a pricing policy that demands you watch your renewal price. Hence 3.9 out of 5: a clear recommendation as a website builder with a shop attached, and an equally clear non-recommendation as the foundation of a scaling e-commerce business.
Our tip
Test for free first, decide later
The free Wix plan runs indefinitely and shows you the editor, templates and AI features at zero risk. Build a test site before you buy – and if your goal is a scaling shop, test Shopify in parallel. Transparency: we have no partnership with Wix; this is a plain link.
Frequently asked questions about Wix
What does Wix cost?
German plans regularly range from €16.66 (Light) through €29.75 (Core) and €40.46 (Business) up to €177.31 per month (Business Elite), including VAT on yearly billing. There is also an unlimited free plan with Wix branding. Frequent promotions cut the first year by up to 50 percent; renewals are regularly much more expensive, so budget accordingly.
Can I run an online store on Wix for free?
No. The free plan and the Light plan cannot accept payments. Selling starts with the Core plan (regular €29.75/month incl. VAT). In return, Wix takes 0% commission on your sales.
Is Wix good enough for a serious online store?
For small catalogs, yes: up to 50,000 products, a decent checkout, Klarna and PayPal, coupons, abandoned-cart emails. The limits: max 1,000 variants per product, a barely customizable checkout without upsells, no POS and no SEPA direct debit in Germany, no ERP connectivity, and noticeable performance weaknesses. For shops with growth ambitions, Shopify is the better base.
Wix or Shopify?
Wix if the website comes first and the shop stays small: more design freedom, easier editing, cheaper payment fees (1.9% vs. 2.1% on Shopify Basic). Shopify as soon as the shop is the business: around 18,400 apps versus a few hundred, a customizable checkout with upsells, Shopify Markets for international selling, and the complete dropshipping ecosystem that Wix lacks.
Is Wix good for SEO?
The bad reputation dates from the platform’s early days. Today Wix serves server-rendered HTML with automatic sitemaps, redirects and structured data; in 2025/2026 Core Web Vitals surveys, Wix sites pass Google’s metrics more often than WordPress sites. For normal projects, Wix SEO is no longer an obstacle.
Can I take my data and leave Wix?
Only partially. Products, orders and contacts can be exported as CSV; design, page content and code cannot be exported at all. Migrating means rebuilding on the target platform plus importing your data. Even switching templates within Wix requires rebuilding the site.
Can Wix be used GDPR-compliantly?
Doable, but with homework. Wix provides a data processing agreement with standard contractual clauses and ships a Usercentrics cookie banner; servers are located partly in the US, and EU-only hosting cannot be selected. Since 2026, German paid plans from Core upwards include court-proof German legal texts (free for the first year). Imprint, privacy policy and consent configuration remain the operator’s responsibility.
